NEW 2007-08 SEASON OUTLINE

SCA OPLENAC, in celebration of its 20th anniversary, is delighted to announce to all members of ensembles, new members, all parents, and the Serbian community, a plan and program for the 2007/2008 year:

With the beginning of the season around the corner, SCA OPLENAC will collaborate and start working with one of the biggest and most recognized names in Serbian Folklore, traditional song and dance, Mrs. Bogdanka Boba Djuric, long-standing director of Serbian National Professional Ensemble “KOLO” from Belgrade. Mrs. Djuric is otherwise recognized by the Serbian government as a respected professional for keeping up Serbian traditional folklore and song in schools across Serbia.

Mrs. Djuric has agreed upon a long-term collaboration with SCA OPLENAC, and starting September she will begin a 10-day seminar dedicated to the teachers, instructors, choreographers, and anyone who is interested in learning a little more about our region, especially in working with children and youth in which the instructors will raise their level of knowledge and professionalism.

In this manner, we are inviting all dancers from Oplenac’s first representative ensemble, teachers and choreographers from Oplenac, and the rest of the folkloric ensembles in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and U.S. We would love for you to join us in this fascinating learning experience in a true working environment with the kids and youth. The seminar will be held at Oplenac’s dance studio.

SCA OPLENAC would also like to remind you that this season will be marked by trips and social events.

Wouldn’t you love to go to DISNEYWORLD with your friends from Oplenac?

In the spring of 2008, we are planning a trip to DisneyWorld, FL for all that are interested – details will be posted on Oplenac’s website later this fall.

SCA OPLENAC is proud to announce to all members and dancers that besides all the artistic programs in Oplenac, training for basketball, soccer, and martial arts will also be provided. An agreement has been put in place with one of the most successful Serbian basketball coaches from Belgrade. Bratislav Bata Djordjevic, father of professional basketball player Aleksandar Sasa Djordjevic. Mr. Bata Djordjevic is going to work on fundamentals of basketball with youth through the help of his coaches. One essential part of the program will take place in Oplenac. This program is in preparation, but we would appreciate it if you could tell us at registration which sports your children would be interested in.
SCA OPLENAC is organizing a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on September 9th and is inviting all interested to sign up.

SCA OPLENAC has become a unique Serbian Cultural Centre in North America, which fulfills our wishes that our tradition and culture be kept a part of the maturing and socializing of our children and youth.

COME AND CHOOSE FROM NUMEROUS APPEALING PROGRAMS:

  • Folklore for children and youth – with the best and most qualified choreographers and instructors from Belgrade and Toronto. The program covers all age groups. For the youngest children, the program will be put together with skilled help from Bogdanka Boba Djuric. Throughout the year there will be plenty of new choreographies within the youngest and oldest ensembles.
  • Recreational folklore – recreation with guaranteed satisfaction and socializing, and a great taste of Budimka’s cakes. Those of you who are regulars on Thursday nights are familiar with what we are talking about, as for the rest of you, come and find out – you will be pleasantly surprised.
  • SCA Oplenac Orchestra – if you play, or would like to learn how to play a traditional instrument, join the Oplenac orchestra.
You will be taught by one of the co-founders of ensemble LEGENDE from Belgrade, Dusan Dule Suvajac.
  • School of Music – besides the piano, violin, and accordion, those who want to learn how to play the guitar will have a chance to be taught by an adequate teacher.
  • Children’s Choir – Mrs. Lidija Grkovic is the director and professional leader of the children’s choir. At the year-end concert of the younger ensembles in June of 2007, our children showed how their voices refresh and rejoice their parents and the rest of the audience. We are delighted to continue this program in September.
  • Adult Choir – with conductor Jasmina Vucurovic. Songs from our region and the rest of the world will be sang and performed;
those that love to sing should join us – you will not be disappointed.
  • Serbian School – besides the fact that Oplenac will organize Serbian language classes in many schools from the Toronto District School Board, there will also be Serbian lessons at the Oplenac building led be Ljiljana Culum.
  • Drama – full of enthusiasm, youthfulness, and compromise, our young and talented drama instructor, Mladen Obradovic, will teach the drama school where, through acting and playing, the children also practice their language. At the end of the year, a play will be held for all participants.
  • School of Solo Singing – for those interested, we are sure that Mrs. Lidija Grkovic will fulfill all your expectations. (New program)
  • Hip-Hop Dance for all Ages – this new program will be instructed by Katarina Rajkovic-Corbic, and many will be interested in Dance Kraze Productions. The groups will be split into the following age groups: kids 6-10 years, pre-teens 11-14 years, teens 15-18 years, and adults over 18 years old. (New program)
  • Sports of your choice – (in preparation – new program)
  • Oplenac Summer Camp – starting summer 2008.
  • Volunteer Work – for youth – if you need community service hours for school, call us, at Oplenac you are always welcome; for adults – Oplenac would not be where it is today if it wasn’t for the volunteers that put in endless hours.
